EU | Ban on single-use plastic products takes effect




In June 2019, the European Union passed the directive on single-use plastics (EU No. 2019/904), which aims to prevent and reduce the environmental impact of certain plastic products. The directive will be implemented on July 3, 2021. From the effective date of the ban, the member states of the European Union shall pass domestic regulations no later than two years to ensure that the ban is implemented in their own countries.

 

Up to now, in all EU countries, 23 countries have legislated or taken actions for the single-use plastics directive ( SUP, Single Use Plastics), but Slovakia, Slovenia, Cyprus, and Poland have postponed the implementation of the directive.

 

The directive explicitly prohibits the following types of disposable plastic products from being placed on the EU market:

 

Cotton swab sticks, tableware (knives, forks, spoons, chopsticks), plates, straws, beverage stirring sticks, balloon sealing sticks, food and beverage containers made of expanded polystyrene and their lids, expanded polystyrene cups and Its lid and oxidatively degradable plastic products. In addition, biodegradable plastic products also fall within the regulatory scope of the directive.
